It is 1847. In a rain swept graveyard in New England, Inspector Jericho Jones exhumes the body of Edward Middleton, and finds that the man was poisoned with arsenic. Edward’s young wife, Sarah, suspiciously vanishes from the town, and while his detectives try to discover her whereabouts, Jericho is drawn into the sad drama of Sarah’s marriage to the aging Edward and their subsequently unhappy life together as told to him through the testimonies of her family and friends. As Jericho encounters several shocking revelations, he is faced with the fact that more than one person would have enjoyed escorting Edward to his grave - and with the difficult challenge of reconciling his own sense of guilt, innocence and justice.
